Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a very thin small to medium (1 to 3 inches) contracting stem point with a thin cross section. The blade is primarily straight, but some examples may have a slightly excurvate blade or an incurvate to recurvate blade on re-sharpened examples. The blade is right handed beveling. The blade may range from finely serrated to plain. The junction between the stem and the shoulder is formed with a sweeping curve, however some examples may have a more angular junction. The shoulders may vary from horizontal to having an upward angle. The stem may range from straight to slightly contracting. The base is commonly straight, but may be slightly convex to slightly concave. This point is finely made using percussion flaking with fine finishing pressure flaking along the right edge forming a random flaking pattern. Right handed beveling is the key characteristic of this point.
Size Measurements:
Total Length - 25 to 75 mm (typically 50 to 60 mm), Stem Length - 6 to 11 mm, Blade Width - 28 to 40 mm, Stem Width - 15 to 22 mm
Commonly Utilized Material:
Heat treated agatiized coral
Additional Comments:
The Gibson point is commonly heat treated allowing for a much thinner point made with random percussion flaking and fine pressure flaking on the right edge and may be finely serrated. The shoulder meets the stem with a wide curve while the stem is visibly shorter than the standard Hardee type with a straight to slightly convex base.
